A&E Live: Meet Leeds doctor who helped save patient on first episode

Patients and staff at Leeds' A&E department took centre stage last night as a new documentary mini-series aired on ITV.

From a man brought in with suspected spinal injuries following a high-speed car collision, to an elderly patient who fell down a flight of concrete steps, the first of three A&E Live episodes was packed with drama from start to finish.

Fronted live by presenter Davina McCall, the ITV show is going behind-the-scenes to capture the stories of patients, from 999 call to treatment as-it-happens in A&E.

A&E Live: YEP speaks to Davina McCall ahead of new ITV series in Leeds

Among those to feature in last night’s episode was 55-year-old Peter, rushed to Leeds General Infirmary after being hit by a car at 40mph.

With no visible cuts, within 30 minutes of arriving into the resuscitation department, he was checked for internal injuries using a CT scan.

It revealed a significant fracture to his pelvis and acute, life-threatening internal bleeding.

A&E Live: Everything you need to know about Davina McCall's new show which is set at Leeds General Infirmary

After having a critical blood transfusion, interventional radiologist Paul Walker was called in from home to carry out life-saving surgery on Peter to stop the bleeding

Dr Walker, pictured, uses X-Rays to find bleeding points in the body in the cutting-edge procedure.

Some two hours and 15 minutes after arriving, Dr Walker manages to stop his internal bleeding and the episode shows Peter being prepared for theatre to fix his damaged pelvis.
