A fond farewell for '‚North East Leeds lunch club

SOME say all good things must come to an end - and it was an emotional end to a club that for decades has brought friendship and chat into the lives of a group of older people in north Leeds today.

North East Leeds Luncheon Club’s 22 members are now almost exclusively in their 90s, and without young blood to drive the club forward, the tough decision was made to call it a day.

But today’s final celebration at the White House Pub in Roundhay was one of joy, not sadness.

Shirley Woodman, who has attended since the 1970s and is now chairman, said: “It has been wonderful to be here amongst everybody, with everyone dressed in their finery. The club has been running since the early 1970s, and I’ve loved every minute of it. It has meant a lot to each of the members, it’s a hive of conversation.”
