A £5.5m contract to build a new primary school on the former site of a sports centre in Beeston has been signed.

Interserve Construction Limited has been awarded the tender for the new Lane End Primary School, which will be located on Beeston Road on the site of the now demolished South Leeds Sports Centre.

The 420-pupil primary school, with a 26-space nursery, was approved in February, with a total budget of £7.2m to cover all elements of the new build.

Leeds City Council is building several new primary, schools - and expanding a swathe of others - as it bids to plug a potential shortage of more than 4,000 early years school places. The need has been fuelled by a booming birth rate, and a surge in new young families coming to the city.

A report just signed off by senior council officers says the project is “part of ongoing work to address capacity and sufficiency, which includes provision for primary and secondary school places”.

The report adds: “This proposal is for a new school to serve the area and does not replace any existing schools within the community.”

Although scheduled to open in September this year, it is anticipated the whole building will not be completed until the 2015/16 academic year. Temporary classrooms will be used until construction is completed.
