200 years old: A look back at the Leeds Liverpool Canal

200 years have passed since the opening of the Leeds Liverpool Canal and today we look at some old images showing the history of this magnificent waterway.

An industrial view from 1951 looks up the Aire Valley towards Kirkstall. Hopeful boys in 1961 cast their lines into the water on Whitehall Road when there were fewer fish than there are today.

In 1941 the wartime censor put a warning stamp on the back of our print to ensure the anonymity of the location.

A 1955 ice breaker ploughs its way through at Newlay and Rodley in 1968 provided a wonderfully reflective view.
