More than £170,000 worth of work has started to overhaul a popular Leeds park’s visitor café.

The revamp to the existing Bakery Café at Golden Acre Park, in Bramhope, will see a conservatory added to offer seating on its upper patio level for an extra 40 people.

It will also see proposals for a new toilet extension, suitable for people with disabilities and providing a baby changing space, made a reality through Leeds City Council funds.

Once the 10-week revamp is complete, the complex will be fit to host 86 visitors indoors.

Coun Mark Dobson, the council’s executive member for the environment, said: “Golden Acre Park remains an extremely popular place for people of all ages in our city to visit, and we are delighted to be moving forward with Franklin Windows Ltd on the construction of a new conservatory at the café.

“Providing additional seating for 40 people on a new upper tier at the café, once completed this conservatory will add another dimension to the views of the park and be somewhere extremely relaxing to enjoy a drink and have something to eat.”

During the refurbishment the café and kiosk will remain open to the public but will offer a restricted service.

Around £45,000 has been put forward by the council’s adult social care department for the facility’s new toilet extension, while the authority has also contributed £28,000 for materials and other costs.

Over £100,000 of funding has been provided through local firm Franklin Windows Ltd for the conservatory work, while support in the form of building materials is being offered by Mone Bros Ltd.

Josh Franklin, owner and managing director of Franklin Windows, said: “We at Franklin Windows Ltd are thrilled the project has now officially started.

“We are looking forward to transforming the Bakery Café with a new conservatory.”
