16-year-old appears before Leeds Crown Court accused of murdering Irfan Wahid

Irfan, also 16, died from a single stab wound to the chest in Harehills Lane, Leeds, at around 3.45pm on Friday afternoon.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but died shortly afterwards.

The defendant, who cannot be identified, appeared before Leeds Crown Court today. (Feb 16)

No pleas were entered to the murder charge.

The case was adjourned until March 23 when a plea and trial preparation hearing will be held.

A provisional trial date was set for July 23. No application for bail was made and the teenager was remanded in custody until the next hearing.

Friends of Irfan have arranged a peaceful vigil on the spot where he died.

Posting on a Facebook page set up in memory of the 16-year-old, a schoolfriend appealed for people to ‘sort out their beef’ by shaking hands and making peace at the gathering.

It will take place at 3pm today (Feb 16) at the spot on Harehills Lane where he was killed.

The post reads: ‘I would like every Muslim and non-Muslim to who knew or who didn’t know Irfan to come down to the place where he was attacked and sort out our beef, show respect to one another, and to make Irfan proud.

“If any of us has a bad relationship with one another then I would like all of you to just shake hands and show respect to Irfan, because we cannot afford to lose another beautiful soul.’
