12 Dogs of Christmas: Can you give them a new home

This year Dogs Trust Leeds celebrated finding 12,000 homeless hounds their forever homes in the 10 years that it has been based at its York Road site.

From dogs found abandoned and wandering the streets to those whose owners have sadly passed away, the Rehoming Centre takes in and cares for hundreds of dogs every year and 2016 has been no different.

At any one time Dogs Trust Leeds can look after around 100 dogs, and they never have an empty kennel. Now, as we head towards Christmas, the charity is keen to remind everyone of their slogan, ‘A dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ in the hope that next year fewer four-legged friends will find themselves without a home.

Here are the first of 12 dogs we will be featuring in Yorkshire Evening Post the run-up to Christmas who are hoping that by the time 2017 comes around, they are settled into new loving homes.

If you think you could offer Tia and Gizmo their ideal homes, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. The Rehoming Centre is open Friday-Monday 12pm-4pm and 12pm-7.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is closed on Wednesdays. You can find out more at www.dogstrust.org.uk

Name: Tia

Age: 19 months

Breed: Alaskan Malamute

Tia is stunning and a typical Alaskan Malamute – big, strong and happy to be out in all weathers! She arrived at the Rehoming Centre in January so has sadly seen the seasons come and go – and is hoping she doesn’t welcome in 2017 without a home of her own. The breed takes its name from the Mahlemut tribe of Eskimos who developed and used the breed for pulling heavy loads over long distances, so she has lots of stamina!

Type of home needed: As well as being strong and having lots of energy because of her breed, Tia is also still young so needs an active adult-only home with no visiting children and no other pets.

Name: Gizmo

Age: Two

Breed: Crossbreed

Gizmo found himself homeless in July after sadly his owners became ill and could no longer give him the time they knew he needed. He is clever, playful and energetic but he can be shy at first, especially with male two-legged friends.

Type of home needed: As Gizmo is still young, he needs an active owner and someone who will give him time to settle in and understand he is in his forever home. He would benefit from some basic training to help him become the best he can be and would thrive in a quiet home without children.
