Poppleton is packed with history – it’s mentioned in the Domesday Book – and has scooped prizes for its beautiful blooms.

It’s also known for its relaxed charm, comfortable homes and as a haven for commuters: it’s just a stone’s throw from the heart of York.

Now a chance to put down roots in one of its thriving local businesses has just emerged.

Cardland, the village newsagents and card shop in Nether Poppleton, has gone on the market for just the third time in over half a century of trading.

Current owners Stephen and Liz Kane are set to retire – opening up a ‘once in a generation’ chance for someone to take over.

The shop, in Allerton Drive, is the only one of its kind in the area and at the very heart of the Poppleton community, which consists of the parishes of Upper and Nether Poppleton.

Mr Kane said that although he’s worked in exotic locations all over the world as an IT consultant, he’ll miss his time in Poppleton most.

He added: “We have mixed emotions about moving on but we’re coming up to our 15th year here and it’s time to time to retire to sunnier climes.

“The Upper and Nether Poppleton area is a very special place, we’ve had a wonderful time working here. We have got to known our customers well down the years, and we’ll miss them all.”

The couple’s newsagent is a regular port of call for many villagers thanks to its eclectic range of goods – Mr Kane turned his interest in watches into a feature of the shop, while it is highly regarded for its stock of quality greetings cards.

Toby, the couple’s Labrador, has also been a ‘fixture’ for the past 12 years.

Upper and Nether Poppleton are just four miles from the centre of York but with a laid-back rural feel which has made it popular among retired couples and commuters.

As well as scooping a number of ‘Britain in Bloom’ awards for its floral displays, Nether Poppleton attracted attention from C4’s Time Team when they carried out an archaeological dig and discovered evidence of a monastic building dated AD 450-850.

Mr Kane added: “It’s been a lovely place to work – it’s given us a good living and we’ve enjoyed being here.

“We’re sure whoever takes over will love it as much as we do.”

Cardland is being sold through business property specialists Ernest Wilson.
