The post office and gift shop in Boston Spa is a rare ‘first-class’ chance for someone keen to escape the rat race, and be their own boss in a fabulous rural location.

Boston Spa is a favourite spot for some of England’s best-known faces, including ‘Greatest Living Yorkshireman’ contender, cricketer Geoff Boycott, and several stars from soap drama Emmerdale.

It’s not surprising they’ve opted to live there – the family-friendly village was recently voted one of the best places to live in England by The Sunday Times.

Now Boston Spa Post Office, which is right at the heart of village life, has gone on the market along with a fantastic family home attached.

The High Street post office and gift shop plus the impressive three-bedroom home above it are being sold by local couple Anthony and Karen Williams.

The couple, who have been behind the counter for 12 years, are planning to retire to a new life in Spain.

Anthony (56) said: “It’s a fantastic business in a beautiful village and we’ve built up a good rapport with the customers. We’ll miss them, but it’s time to move on and let someone else enjoy living and working in such a nice place.

“Having our home upstairs from the business has been perfect – it has meant there’s no long commute to work which is something a lot of people are looking for these days.

“Plus, the village is a lovely place for children to grow up in, there are good schools nearby and Wetherby is just three miles away.”

The business and home are in a perfect spot at the top of a hill overlooking the river and close to walkers’ trails and tourist spots.

Boston Spa was developed in the mid-18th century after mineral springs were discovered in the area. Baths were built to meet demand from visitors from all over to try the spa waters in the hope of relieving medical conditions and for their ‘feel good’ qualities.

By the mid-19th century, the town had grown, with hotels, inns and bars and attractive homes.

Its High Street is lined with attractive properties and villas, while the River Wharfe attracts visitors who want to stroll along its banks and spot the local wildlife.

Anthony said the closure of local banking services, means the Post Office is busier than ever. “Whoever takes over will be given lots of support to help get them up to speed with how the Post Office operates,” he added.

The freehold business and property are being sold through Leeds-based business experts Ernest Wilson, who’s specialist staff have decades of experience in helping buyers and sellers across a huge range of businesses.

Paul Williamson from Ernest Wilson said: “This is a very profitable and successful Post Office in a much sought after, large, affluent village.

“It has a prime trading position in a bustling High Street and is a substantial freehold property with spacious retail and luxury owners’ accommodation.

“It is a delightful place to live and work, and we expect a lot of people will be interested in it.”
