Fraser Stride was on a well-trodden trajectory from Leeds city centre flat to sought-after suburb when he took a left turn that led him to an oasis lined with multi-coloured Victorian houses.

He was bowled over by Oak Road in Potternewton, which had charm in abundance along with much more. Not only was it close to his original search areas of Chapel Allerton and Roundhay, property prices on the terraced row were much less expensive than in those North Leeds hotspots.

“I fell in love with the street. It looked like such a beautiful place to live with an avenue of trees and birds singing and the houses are such good value. They are big and have really good-sized gardens. I put an offer in straight away,” says Fraser, who bought the property six years ago and who is now selling it for £535,000 with Preston Baker estate agents.

Since buying the house, he and his partner, Victoria, have transformed the five-bedroom home, beginning with the exterior, which was a claret colour and is now a bright blue. Inside, what was one an enormous bathroom was turned into an en-suite and a dressing room. The top floor was insulated to make it cosy and the kitchen and boiler updated.

A big part of their budget was spent outside on the gardens. One of the best new features in the front garden is a new path of Victorian tiles, while the back garden has lawns, beds and a large decked area.

The decor inside is stylish and bold thanks to Victoria who persuaded Fraser to be more adventurous with colour. “I had started to paint everything grey but she thought that would be too dull and with a bit of persuasion I agreed to more colour, which works really well," he says. She also convinced him to cover one wall of the sitting room in Christian Lacroix wallpaper, which looks sensational.

The house, which is set over three floors, retains many of its period features, and has an entrance hall, sitting room, open-plan kitchen with dining area, utility room and cloakroom. On the two upper floors, there are five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Outside, there are gardens and a garage with electric car charging point.

Fraser and Victoria are selling to relocate to Cumbria but will miss their Potternewton idyll. “It’s been a really wonderful place to live. Chapel Allerton is on the doorstep and so is Leeds city centre,” says Fraser.
