A sophisticated Sunday roast at Chapel Allerton's new opening, Black Market

Black Market - the latest indie opening in Chapel Allerton.

There’s been some belting independents popping up in the suburbs throughout 2018, and Chapel Allerton’s Black Market is the latest Leeds indie restaurant to rock my world. Sitting pretty just opposite one of my faves The Mustard Pot, chef and owner Jon has worked hard with his partner and co-owner Justina to deliver unfussy fine-dining in a cool, unassuming setting.

The décor is dark and moody, with subtle nods to pop culture, such as Technics turntables and music icon posters. We paid a visit to try out their Sunday roast and the menu is filled with hearty classics with unexpected twists.

Tempted by both the Roast Beef and Lamb Leg stuffed with apricots and walnuts, I ended up going for the Truffle Chicken which was to-die-for with its crispy skin and rich, creamy truffle. I’m a little bit of a snob when it comes to my roasties, but these bad boys were spot-on crispy on the outside and fluffy in the centre.

Truffle chicken and calorific but worth it Yorkshire Puds.

The oversized Yorkshire pudding didn’t disappoint either, dominating my plate with calorific goodness.

I could’ve happily eaten two more, but trying to keep trim for the party season so resisted temptation.

I can’t say the same when it came to dessert and ordered the Death By Chocolate with vanilla ice-cream.

Washed down with one of the best bottles of red wine I’ve sampled in recent months, I predict this will continue making waves in 2019.

Black Market is a fantastic addition to Chapel Allerton and well worth travelling for. Especially for the only bottomless brunch in the area which I’ll be sampling after NYE. Dry January what?
