Peanuts are not usually an ingredient included in pesto, and the product could pose a serious risk for people who are allergic to them.

Recall over undeclared peanuts

Italian sauce brand Sacla triggered the recall when it was discovered that the label on the affected products doesn't warn about the presence of peanuts, and a shopper suffered from an allergic reaction.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Aldi have now removed the jars of pesto due to the risk.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has also issued an allergy alert, warning that 25 pesto products may be affected, including own-brand jars from Waitrose and Aldi.

Sacla, Aldi and Waitrose have displayed point-of-sale notices for their customers, which explain why the products are being recalled and what they should do if they have bought the product.

The FSA said, “Sacla is recalling various pesto products listed below because they may contain peanuts which are not mentioned on the label. This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts.

“If you have bought any of the above products and have an allergy to peanuts, do not eat them. Instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”

In a tweet, Sacla UK explained that “some of the cashew nuts coming into our factory may contain traces of peanut, and this has affected some of our pesto.”

The company went on to say, “We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to you this Christmas time.”
