Despite trying to operate as normal for as long as possible while the fall out from coronavirus gathered pace last week, the independently owned Wapentake, along with other cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants across the city was forced to close its doors on Friday following government orders.

Along with the other cluster of local businesses on Kirkgate, from arts and crafts shop such as Fred Aldous to the warming pubs of The Palace, Duck & Drake, Doghouse Bar & Bagel Shop and plenty more, the bosses at Wapentake had a race on to adapt the business in order to try and survive the crisis.

Andre Gwilliam said: "Wapentake brings many a smiles to the people of Leeds. A Leeds United hideaway upstairs and a family friendly, gig topping place downstairs, let's support this local through what will be an incredibly tough period - plus, their beers are great."

Wapentake was opened by Anton Welburn, back in December 2015, and he says he knows how important the people are.

“We feel it’s important to highlight the fact that local businesses in Leeds need the people’s support. In the four years we have been open, we have had a strong following of customers come to see us. We, amongst many other locals, are supported by the people of Leeds. Whether it showing a Leeds United game or hosting The Crooner Club every Wednesday night for artists, the people of Leeds make it all happen.”
