As the party season arrives, Katie Elsworth selects some dazzling party options to glisten with confidence through the festivities.

It’s the most decadent and luxuriously dressed time of the year with sparkles, sparkles and more sparkles – and plenty of shine on top of all those sparkles – making for an instant hit at any party affair this autumn/winter.

Choose the right glittery garment and it’s not just for this Christmas, but will remain a solid turn-to piece in your wardrobe for years to come, a timeless, instantly party-ready offering, waiting to be taken out and shown the town.

You can be the one to brighten up any celebration room this Christmas with dazzling fabrics, of which there is no shortage on the High Street at the moment, with arrays of glittering dresses and party separates available in stores and online. The sequin skirt is a major trend for this festive season, in gold, silver, black or navy. It teams best with matt or soft sheen fabrics, so look out for silk and cashmere and don’t allow the top to be overly ornate or fussy, so as not to detract from the skirt itself.

The right colour of sparkle will update your party look instantly. Night sky colours are a big hit for this year with dark silver, midnight blue and black dresses adorned with metallic sparkles, sequins and beading, and also in lovely all-over lurex options, offering a sophisticated way to shine. Emerald green, rich gold and purple are all excellent options for this Christmas and New Year.

Choosing accessories for statement outfits couldn’t be easier if you stick to on-trend materials like velvet and suede. Buckled court shoes and cross-body clutch bags are cute additions that subtly add practicality and elegance.

Don’t be scared to wear black on black for an immediate look of chic sophistication, for example, a black sequin clutch with a classic matt black LBD.

Make-up needs careful consideration. Add to the chic overall appeal with a bright lip, which can work for any look and for any season, but it’s especially effective in the dark winter months, so it’s a make-up trend that’s a must-try with whatever colour palette you choose. If you wear black and gold, for example, and then add the perfect bold shade of red to the lip, you’ll create a classic standout look without really trying.

Sheer is a great way to go in the party season, allowing you to show a hint of skin without revealing too much or feeling too chilly. Look for lace and chiffon sleeved party dresses and blouses as a flattering way to get into the party spirit.

Capes can add a touch of Twenties’ or deco style. In fact, they give a really traditional Christmas touch to even the most contemporary of outfits and can really look beautiful when kept simple and elegant, although don’t let that stop you from adding add faux fur extras to make a luxurious and cosy style statement that you’ll be glad of when venturing out of doors.
