An innovative Yorkshire recycling company is leading the way in a green battle to ensure we make the most of our food waste.

Forge Recycling of Leeds has a record of breaking new ground in the fight to end the flow of waste to landfill and find new ways of recycling what we no longer want.

Now it has racked up huge success with its new commercial food waste collection service and is helping Yorkshire’s farmers in the process.

Launched in June, Forge Recycling’s commercial food collections have transformed the way businesses across Yorkshire tackle their waste, helping to save them money and diverting at least 250 tonnes of food waste from landfill.

Forge Recycling’s specialist food waste collection teams deliver waste and plant-based compostable cups - which many other collectors find difficult to recycle effectively – and delivers it to a specialist partner.

Once at Maltings Organic Treatment, food waste from pubs, restaurants, cafes and scores of other Yorkshire businesses, is processed to eventually become compost, and then distributed to farmers across Yorkshire to use on their fields.

The process is extremely effective, as it means cups which have recyclable properties - such as hugely popular Vegware – can be effectively reused, something which not all waste companies can achieve.

Vegware’s eco-friendly food containers and cups are often used by takeaway businesses, hospitals and universities in a bid to meet ‘green’ targets. But without the specialist service offered by Forge Recycling, the plant-based products can end up being sent for incineration or to landfill.

According to Harvey Mills, Managing Director of Forge Recycling, its innovative approach is not only helping to save waste from ending in landfill, but is also helping commercial customers save money.

“Often compostable cups just end in general waste and in turn in landfill – that ends up costing businesses more for their waste collections.

“As well as saving money by using our food waste service, they are helping to ensure there’s a new use for their waste – as compost.”

The Armley-based business has close links with Yorkshire’s food and drink businesses, and is sponsoring the 12th Yorkshire Evening Post Oliver Awards prestigious Overall Restaurant of the Year category.

As well as its new food waste collection service, Forge Recycling offers a full range of recycling and waste collection services to commercial customers, bringing peace of mind that their waste is being handled professionally and without fuss.

Founded in 2010, the business recently won the Apprenticeship Award at the recent Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards.

Forge Recycling has also recently launched a city-wide cup recycling service in York, expanded glass collection in north and west Yorkshire, and unveiled its innovative paper cup collection service with Leeds City Council which sees cups recycled into paper.

The business also provides everything from a single skip to a full waste clearance service for households and businesses.
