Days out in Yorkshire: York Dungeon

Have your say

Do you like boring history lessons? Staring aimlessly at a mannequin behind a small window? Struggling to decipher an essay on a faded board as your eyes glaze over? Then you’ll hate the York Dungeon.

In the heart of the city and just down the road from Clifford’s Tower, York Dungeon is the most entertaining history lesson you’ll ever have. Over 80 minutes, you’ll experience two millennia worth of macabre York history as you become immersed in the stories being told.

With sets, special effects, and nine friendly actors, York’s most famous (and infamous figures) are brought vividly to life.

Learn about the Gunpowder Plot from Guy Fawkes himself and become lost in the disorientating mirror maze with a Roman soldier. And if all the scares are making you feel a little weak, worry not, because the resident plague doctor will check you out!

When the hugely popular attraction was forced to close in 2012 following devastating floods, a bold decision was made. Its owners saw the flooding as an opportunity and the Dungeon was made even better. Scripts were tweaked, sets were redesigned and an increasing emphasis was placed on making the attraction more theatrical and engaging.

And it paid off, with York Dungeon now being one of the most highly recommended attractions that the Roman city has to offer. If you’ve never been, or haven’t visited for a few years, there hasn’t been a better time to. Beware though, it’s not for the faint-hearted!
