Historic house? Check. Around 500 acres of parkland? Check. A deer park and woodland trails? Check?

Add in 60 acres of stunning gardens and with atmospheric views and it all amounts to the fantastic Wentworth Castle Gardens.

Wentworth is located South West of Barnsley and home to the grade I listed mansion, but the main attraction is the stunning gardens.

Start off at The Long Barn visitor centre, which also houses toilets, a baby change and visitor information. It’s a good place to finish as you can grab a snack and brew in the Terrace Tea Room.

There are more than a dozen different gardens and areas to explore, ranging from the Union Jack Gardens to the Victorian Flower Garden – known locally as the secret garden.

In winter, look out for the snowdrops appearing through the fading frosts. It’s a great destination for walking off the excesses of Christmas with some breathtaking views of not only the gardens, but the horizons stretching out across South Yorkshire.

And as spring approaches, the gardens burst into life – the colours are at their most vibrant between March and July, but don’t let that put you off visiting later in the year as the whole attraction takes on an autumnal magic.

Much like its plant life, Wentworth never stops growing. A major £3.7m restoration is under way to bring the Conservatory back to its former glory.

Complete with a host of new plants and visitor facilities, it is due for completion in September – but visitors can safely get a sneak preview of the ongoing work right now.

The parkland is also home to two herds of deer – red and fallow – and has miles of waymarked trails to explore along with some incredible monuments like the Rotunda which was restored in 2010.

Guided tours around the house and the gardens run regularly so check out the website for details of the next ones.
