Days out in Yorkshire: Snozone, Xscape, Glasshoughton

Have your say

It might be minus 5°C, but after flying down the hill and side stepping your way back up, you won’t feel the cold.

According to the good people at the fantastic Snozone inside the giant Xscape centre, skiing is the new gym.

Why? Because it works your entire body, burns up to 500 calories an hour – and for me, it’s way more fun.

My wife Michelle and I swapped passports and planes for the M62 to hit this nearby slope and were a bit nervous.

What’s really great about Xscape is that the snow is as real as anything you are likely to come across while on holiday in the French Alps.

But for those who have never strapped on skis, the beginners’ lessons are perfect. We were taught the ropes and slopes by expert Mark (a Sunderland fan).

His friendly, funny and informative style had the small group whizzing down and back up in no time. It’s a surreal, exhilarating experience that most people can try.

One of the best things is that with zero experience, you are actually skiing within an hour and feel like James Bond after 90 minutes! The slopes cater for advanced skiers too at the top of their game.

Kids are welcome from two upwards for snow play – and from three for proper lessons.

A warm coat and thick trousers are ideal clothing – but you can hire the real deal stuff fairly cheaply.

Even better, level one lessons are half price until the end of June.

Xscape is also home to everything including Wave House for surfing, a cinema, rock climbing, soft play, shops, a skate park and more places to eat than an American shopping mall.
