After a year of bicycles and blokes in lycra, maybe you need a break to watch another form of sporting entertainment, right?
Well, from Saturday June 13- Sunday June 21, Ilkley is set to play host to the greatest tennis tournament Yorkshire has ever seen. Yet another feather in the cap for this good county.
The Aegon Ilkley Trophy will take place at the historic Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club nestled in the heart of picturesque Wharfedale, with the tournament forming a key part of the grass court season in the run-up to the famous Wimbledon Championships in SW19.
The tournament is the newest addition to the international Men’s ATP Challenger and Women’s ITF Pro Circuit Tours, with events on each tour attracting world-class players and rising tennis stars.
Qualifying rounds for both men and women will take place on the weekend of June 13-14 and following more than 100 matches throughout the week, the Aegon Ilkley Trophy culminates in the men’s final on Saturday June 20 and the women’s final on Sunday June 21.
Providing the weather is fine – as it really should be mid-June – you might just find a little slice of that famous Wimbledon atmosphere right here in Yorkshire.
And since Ilkley Tennis Club was established in 1880, the Aegon Ilkley Trophy will be a fitting way to celebrate its 135th anniversary.
Tickets are on sale, though it is worth noting no tickets are required for the first weekend. Free, you say?
