Days out in Yorkshire: Dinostar, Hull

Have your say

Now, the last time someone tried to open a visitor attraction based around dinosaurs, it didn’t go so well.

It was an ambitious idea, based around a giant theme park just off the coast of Costa Rica.

After a good start, people ended up getting eaten and the whole thing went sour – so went the story of Jurassic Park.

Thankfully, here in Yorkshire, we do things right and the fabulous hidden gem that is Dinostar gets you up close and personal to some dino specimens that won’t remove your limbs.

The only thing you and the family are likely to be bitten by is intrigue.

Set alongside Hull impressive arts quarter and close by to The Deep and Old Town, Dinostar is an innovative venture which plays on people’s fascination for the ‘terrible lizards’.

It’s ability to let people touch as well as look really ticks the boxes of dino-hunters of all ages. And while you might not get to see Velociraptors sprinting round the place (thankfully), a must-see on any visit is the T-Rex skull. The magnificent specimen isn’t something you see every day.

If that send shivers down your spine, then perhaps the more genteel yet equally powerful Triceratops might be more up your street – and you can even touch its bones.

In many ways, it’s Hull’s own mini natural history museum. There’s a host of other exhibitions including some interactive and others than even smell!

Better still, it’s completely undercover so a great option for wet and windy winter days.

And with Jurassic Park 4 planned for release in summer 2014, there’s never been a better time to brush up on your dino knowledge.
