Days out in Yorkshire: Butterfly House, North Anston

Have your say

A certain price comparison website would have us believe that meerkats are super cute and cuddly with rich personalities.

And if the ones at Tropical Butterfly House are anything to go by, they are spot on.

The attraction has a superb enclosure for the little furballs complete with their own house, dubbed Meerkat Mansion.

But prise yourself away and head further into the attraction and explore. A must see is Lemur Heights, a great enclosure with brilliant vantage points which opened last summer and is home to 10 Ring-tailed and three Red-Ruffed lemurs all excitedly cruising through the trees.

Kids love the Farm Barn – and so do the animals! They really seemed friendly and inquisitive, to the delight of everyone watching. The chickens were particularly cocky.

Next, head inside the Butterfly House itself and crane you neck to catch sight of the countless winged wonders zipping about the place. Bonus points for spotting one of the gorgeous iguanas roaming about and don’t miss a stop at the croc area to say hi to the two Spectacled Caimans.

This area also hosts some cool talks and even better, handling sessions so you can see how brave you really are by handling some of the specimens including a very well fed snake.

A good tip is to get hold of the daily show times as you enter and see one of Heather and the team’s incredible Aerial Antics displays by the birds of prey – there’s some really smart, stunning specimens.

The immaculately manicured grounds are perfect to just wander around and enjoy a picnic at one of the several areas too.

Massive kids play areas will burn off any excess energy should they need it after an exciting day among the animals.
