Days out in Yorkshire: A Christmas adventure

Have your say

As the nights draw in and the weather sees us swapping sunglasses for scarves, thoughts start to turn towards winter and Christmas.

That most wonderful time of year is just seven Sunday lunches away, but worry not, those eager elves humming Christmas songs as soon as bonfire night has passed, Stockeld Park near Wetherby has the decorations up already and is waiting to welcome you.

The estate has undergone considerable investment in the last 12 months, which really enhances the experience.

There is a bigger cafe full of delicious cakes, a hearty main meal menu and a good selection of children’s food, as well as a dedicated Christmas shop which acts like a Santa’s Grotto to passing parents keen to start their seasonal shopping early.

Both are free to visit, but the real delights remain outside in the family run 2,000 acre estate at their Christmas Adventure.

An ice-skating rink, maze and a Nordic ski trail guarantee excitement (for adults and children) while the Enchanted Forest contains untold twinkling surprises, including a bridge of giggling fairies, talking trees and illuminated unicorns concealed in the trees.

It’s like stepping into a scene from a storybook.

A good tip if you fancy the skating is to wear layers and a pair of gloves and pull on a pair of thick socks so you can keep skating even if Jack Frost shows up.

You pay per activity or you can save time by buying a range of day passes which give unlimited access to all the adventure zones all day, good for families who like to get their money’s worth.

So wrap up, bring your camera and be prepared for a magical experience guaranteed to give you a festive fix.

And don’t forget, you can even pick up your pruned Christmas tree while you’re there.
