Bonfire night may only just be over but there’s no time to take your foot off the festive pedal because this Friday, Christmas kicks off in Leeds - as the annual ‘Christkindelmarkt’ opens its doors to welcome all the family.
‘Christkindelmarkt’ Leeds... ...BY REBECCA PENSTON
The authentic German Christmas market, which started in 2002, is one of the largest and best established in the UK.
Millennium Square will be transformed into a scenic winter wonderland with authentic wooden chalet stalls, cosy indoor retreats, and a traditional carousel.
The colourful stalls are bursting with delicious delicacies like freshly-made crepes, traditional Stollen, sizzling sausages and beautiful handmade chocolates. You can also pick up some unique Christmas gifts from the selection of beautifully crafted wooden toys, decorations, jewellery and plenty more.
The Bavarian-themed Alp chalet is the centrepiece of the market, serving delicious traditional food and drink throughout the day – with lively evening entertainment to get you feeling festive.
If you fancy warming up after wandering round the stalls, head to the Kuh Stall where you can relax with a warming mulled wine or beer by the side of a real log fire – and you’re sure to feel peckish when you smell the traditional German sausages cooking on the large grill.
There’s plenty for little visitors at the market – each Saturday and Sunday throughout December and during school half term between 10.30am and 11.45am in the Alp Chalet, children can attend a delicious authentic German breakfast buffet hosted by the one and only Father Christmas. He’ll even deliver presents to the children at their table.
And every Sunday there will be sing-alongs, games, face painting, balloon modelling and appearances from Winter Woodland characters in the market square.
It’s a fantastic event for visitors of all ages – and is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit.
