The Volvo XC40 has been announced as the European Car of the Year for 2018.

The Swedish manufacturer’s compact SUV beat six other cars from brands including Citroen, Kia and Seat by some distance to be selected.

The judging panel praised the Volvo’s quality, looks, ruggedness, safety, agility and performance.

The European Car of the Year win follows closely on the XC40 being named What Car?’s Car of the Year 2018 and the latest win means that the complete line-up of new Volvo SUVs have each been named Car of the Year in either Europe or North America.

The XC40 was crowned the European Car of the Year, dominating voting with 325 points, far ahead of the second placed Seat Ibiza. It also garnered 24 individual top votes from the panel of 60 judges.

Judges’ view

Announcing the winner, the organisers commented: “Well positioned among premium compact SUVs such as Audi Q3 or BMW X1, the XC40 undeniably follows the tracks of its valued bigger brothers, but with a younger focus. Not only it is noticeably smaller than XC60, its fresher style outside and inside seems to aim a different customer too.

“The new Volvo inspires some more dynamic approach than its siblings, and its attitude on tarmac, sitting in a shorter wheelbase and pulling a lower weight, confirms that. The XC40 combines a generous ground clearance with a rather agile handling and the lively performance of its powerful launch versions, especially the 247hp 2.0 T5.”

Volvo’s reaction

Responding to the announcement, Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars commented: “Winning this award with our new XC40 is perfect timing. Volvo now has three globally available SUVs in its range for the first time. The XC40 will be a strong contributor to further growth, taking us into a new and fast-growing small SUV segment.”

The XC40 is the first model built on Volvo’s new compact modular vehicle architecture (CMA), which will underpin all upcoming cars in the 40 series, including fully electrified vehicles.

Among the safety and driver-assistance features on the XC40 which impressed the judging panel are the’ Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road Protection and Mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert with brake support, and a 360-degree camera that helps drivers manoeuvre their car into tight parking spaces.
