In Leeds We Trust: Euro 2020 will be the most interesting tournament in many years for Leeds fans

Many of our players have already made appearances in warm-up friendlies, and Meslier put in an impressive showing despite being knocked out by the Netherlands at the Under-21 European Championships. As for the senior championships there will be seven players representing Leeds at the tournament, all playing for different countries.

International football is always made more interesting when you have faces from your club to look out for in so many of the squads, and in that regard this tournament will be the most interesting in many years for Leeds fans. Especially with an England side that includes our very own Kalvin Phillips who went a step further than his good friend Ben White, who also deserves huge congratulations on his first England cap, in making the final 26-man Euro squad.

Of course, Kalvin will be the one we hope goes the furthest, but with the number of players we have in top teams this year it isn’t unlikely that we could see a Leeds player getting their hands on the trophy.

Closer to home, we are excited to say that our mural at Pudsey Market is well underway. Artist Nicolas Dixon, who also created the ‘Bielsa The Redeemer’ mural which you may already have seen, has done a fantastic job. Thanks have to go to our friends at Leeds United’s Scandinavian supporters club LUSCOS who helped to fund the mural along with local businesses Avanta Care and Barker Harding and of course our members who also made this possible with their donations.

The FSA revealed the results of their fan survey on VAR. The results, while not a surprise to many, gave a good idea of the feelings currently surrounding VAR in English football. 95% of fans were concerned that VAR decisions took the spontaneous joy out of goal, 40% said it may lead them to attend less matches and only 13% believed the overall accuracy of refereeing decisions has improved. Showing the football authorities the way the fans feel is an important step, and hopefully many of the current problems with VAR can be solved.

This week is also National Volunteer’s week and as such we felt we should give some praise to volunteers close to us, in particular those working at the LUFC Foodbank. Even without the in person collections at games this season their fantastic work has continued. As part of our campaign to boycott additional pay per view charges to watch matches this season we raised over £30,000 and with the help of the volunteers at LUFC Foodbank that money will have gone a long way to help those in need in our community.
