Leeds was a town not a city in the 1880s. It was a decade which started with the first telephones established in the town, the opening of the first fish and chip shop and Michael Marks open a stall in Leeds market. Leeds divided into five Parliamentary constituencies by the mid-1880s and Leeds Art Gallery was opened in 1888.
