That win meant Manchester had to win at Anfield to keep their hopes alive.

An early Ian Rush strike and a late Mark Walters goal ensured a 2-0 defeat handing Leeds their first championship for 18 years.

Your YEP asked fans to recall what they were doing the moment they heard the news on that Sunday afternoon.

Here are a selection of responses via facebook:

Marko J O Bomyer - I was at home but ended up in hospital. When we scored the third, I jumped up punching the air, hit a hanging light, got blown back onto the sofa, which fell over backwards causing a mirror to fall off the wall and smash on my head, three stitches in head and butterfly stitches on hand. Actually got through casualty quickly and was in pub in time to see Liverpool confirm us as champions. Great day.

Jeremy Bauer - I was at Bramall Lane for our lunchtime game then listened to the Man U game on the radio on the way back home. Great day but would have been even better if both games had been played at the same time.

Andy Madden - Heard the result driving home (SE London) from a day out in Clacton-on-sea, not moving in nose to tail traffic going mental in the car.

David Michael Johnson - At a wedding just outside Leeds, groom was a Man Utd supporter. Had a great day.

Adrian Broadhead - Bramall Lane then back to Wakefield. In the Old Globe (long gone) when we won it. Can’t remember how I got home.

Phil Coulter - Just got back from two week trek in Nepal. Heard the news on BBC World Service. Promptly got wasted.

Dariusz Szepler - Outside the Town Hall with my dad celebrating.

Colin Diss - Bramall Lane for the game. Leaving the ground with all the car horns will live in my memory.

Chris Self - At Bramall Lane. Drove back to Somerset listening to the Liverpool v Man U match. And then out on the lash.

Bradley Magna - Cafe outside Gare du Nord station in Paris. No mobile phones of course. Asked a waiter if he could find out the result. Went nuts and probably gave him his biggest tip of the day when he told us. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Mike Thornley - I was halfway up a mountain in a jungle in Belize trying to obtain a radio signal with some very unreliable equipment.

David AC Maile - In the Dubliner pub in Gothenburg, Sweden with a mate who is a Liverpool fan all day and consequently all night, with occasional outbursts of 'We Are Leeds' and 'Ooh Ah Cantona'

David Morley - Watched it on big screen at Leeds Polytechnic. Straight to City Square celebrating.

Louis Parsisson - City Square among fifty thousand people. Oh what a day!

John Myers - Going back up M1, people hanging out of cars, sunroofs.... insane.

Andrew Templeton - Taking the union jack down at Queens Hotel and replacing it with a Leeds shirt.

Michael Alderson - In a pub with the Vine branch watching Man U fail after we had won earlier. The trip back to Leeds epic.

Karl Pearson - Playing football in City Square outside Queens Hotel at 2am.

Martin Curran - Unbelievable day was at home in Hoylake but remember going into work in Castle St Liverpool on the Monday morning feeling so so proud and had a permanent smile on my face all day especially working with so many Liverpool fans who to be fair all congratulated Leeds on winning the title. A moment I will never never forget it was surreal.

Responses via Twitter included:

michael phillis (@mphillis2) - Local Sheepscar WMC listening on the radio then East Street crawl ending in the Richmond. Clinking beer mugs. Highlight was pub going quiet while mate picked a random Manchester number from the phone book and asking if they were a Man U fan. Said yes. New Inn erupted into "who's the champions now.."

stuart (@stuart53374157) - Was in a seminar about diabetes in Manchester. And was listening to the match through my ear phones. Crazy day and my message bag was going ten to the dozen, with me trying to answer them all.

Mark Corrigan (@thinyogurtmark) - I was at Bramall Lane then back home. Listened to the Liverpool game, full of it till I found out a Leeds mate had died in a crash in Bradford after watching our game on his way to another pub to watch the other game. He was a lovely bloke and due to marry the following week.

alan miller25 (@AlanMiller25) - Just getting back to Whitby when the final whistle went. The bus erupted and we went on a impromptu tour of Whitby.

Nige McGarry (@LeedsMagoo) - Driving back down to the south west having watched Leeds win at Bramall Lane. Got to Bath as the second Liverpool goal went in. Sunroof and windows open singing Championeees etc

Paul Cooper (@paulc_66) - Playing in a BMW dealership 11-a-side tournament. 30 min games in a four team group. Top two into quarter finals, semi-final then final. The only footballing competition I ever won as a player. Other players letting me know updates of the score during the matches. What a day.
