Search is on for amazing women

Val Winder was a nominee in the education category for her voluntary work for the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) and for her involvement with the Leeds City of Sanctuary movement, which saw her support more than 3,000 women – including asylum seekers and refugees – through birth and parenthood.

As nominations flood in for this year’s awards, which are supported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Val has spoken of her delight.

She said: “I was amazed, absolutely delighted and thrilled. It’s such a wonderful event. There is a buzz in the air. I felt like a celebrity sitting there with my family and friends. It’s something I will never forget. It was very special.

“I felt really proud to represent the important work that the NCT and the breastfeeding counsellors do to support women across the country.”

The Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards in May will recognise inspirational women who have made an exceptional contribution in areas including business, sport, science and technology and the arts. Other categories highlight those who have shown great courage and young achievers.

Charlotte Revill, senior fundraiser at Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley, Leeds, said: “This is an opportunity to nominate an inspirational woman in Yorkshire, whether it is your mum, sister, colleague or friend and help them get the recognition they deserve for all of their hard work.”
