The advice follows the tragic death of Lewis Howlett, 25, who died after going swimming in a stretch of the River Aire off Redcote Lane in Kirkstall.

Emergency services were also called out to rescue a young girl who had difficulty in the water at the Ardsley Reservoir in Tingley in May.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said: "With today set to be the hottest day of the year so far we're urging everyone to please act responsibly around open water.

"As tempting as it is to go in & cool off, there are many hidden dangers which have tragically taken lives.

"Please don't take any risks!"

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service echoed that advice.

A spokesman said: "The weather might be warm, but NEVER be tempted to use open water to cool off or exercise.

"Cold water shock can kill. If you jump in a reservoir, you might not get back out."
