Leeds MS patient hails '˜amazing' results of treatment

Tim Thomson went through a gruelling stem cell transplant last month in a bid to stop his MS from progressing.

He had previously told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he feared the disease would stop him walking his daughter down the aisle.

Following the treatment last month, the dad and grandad said he experienced almost instant improvements.

“I have had some amazing improvements within a day of the chemotherapy finishing,” he said. “I woke up the next day with a range of movement I had not had in years.”

Tim, from Pudsey, decided to undergo the procedure after reading a story in the Yorkshire Evening Post about Kate Dawson, from Wakefield, who had it earlier this year.

He was diagnosed with MS in 2006 after suddenly losing movement down one side of his body.

The 52-year-old and his wife Karen were in Mexico for a month for the treatment, which aims to “reset” the immune system.

Tim, who runs a property development business, said that improvements included that he was able to look up when walking, lift his arms more easily and his thinking was clearer.

“I would say I am 20 to 30 per cent better than I was before,” he said. “I think further improvement may take a couple of years.”

The couple are still fundraising to cover the cost of the treatment – £45,000 in Mexico and another £15,000 for continuing care in the UK.
