Leeds hospital cake sale will be tribute to Dr Kate Granger

Dr Granger, who died of cancer in July, raised £250,000 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre in Leeds, as well as receiving national recognition for her campaign to promote compassionate care.

One of the keen baker’s regular fundraising events were cake stalls at the Bexley Wing at St James’s Hospital, home of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, which she ran with her friend Kay Birmingham.

When Dr Granger was very ill, she told her friend to ensure the sales continued and the next event will take place on November 30.

Miss Birmingham said: “The day before Kate died, she made me promise at her bedside I would continue with our stalls and make her proud and I promised I would do.

“I miss her so much but I am determined to make her proud and make this next stall a success in her memory.”

Dr Granger, from East Ardsley, was diagnosed with a rare and incurable cancer in 2011, aged just 29.

She and her husband Chris Pointon decided to raise money for charity, with funds being raised through feats and events as well as the sale of the doctor’s books about her experiences as a patient, The Other Side and sequel The Bright Side. That book inspired the name of the cake stall team, the Bright Side Big Bake Cake Ladies and the first event was held three years ago.

The events were a huge success and the eighth in February raised £2,400, but it was sadly Dr Granger’s last.

This month’s stall will also support St Gemma’s Hospice in Moortown, where the doctor died, to recognise their care and support of her and her friends and family.

“We are so proud to be supporting the hospice with this stall,” Miss Birmingham added.

Donations of cakes or raffle prizes are welcome for the event, which runs from 10am.
