Toddler with condition affecting just 40 in the world in Leeds NHS fundraising challenge

Jack Humpheys is two and a half years old and is one of just two people in the UK to have a confirmed case of Nephrogenic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (NSIAD).

It means his kidney receptors are overactive and he retains too much fluid in his body. He was treated at Leeds Children’s Hospital from the age of four weeks old where the condition, which causes seizures and vomiting, initially baffled doctors.

To say thank you for the care Jack, and the whole family have received over the years, Louise decided to walk 100 miles in 30 days, pushing Jack along in his pram.

In the past Louise has also fundraised for Leeds Cares specifically to support Ward 40 at Leeds Children’s Hospital where Jack was cared for as a baby, to fund hospital beds for young patients.

She said: "Doctors at Leeds Children’s Hospital hadn’t dealt with this condition before Jack was admitted. We are so thankful for what they have done and continue to do for us today. I am really enjoying our fundraising walks so far, it’s been great to get Jack involved. We are walking a different route every day and enjoying seeing lots of different things along the way.”

Jack continues to visit the hospital every six weeks for treatment from his consultant Dr Hitesh Prajapati, one of the incredible doctors who saved his life and battled to get his diagnosis.

Jack and Louise have so far raised £180 and this will help fund, care packages for staff and patients, assistance with travel and accommodation where necessary and health and well-being initiatives to help boost morale across the wards.
