Meet the Leeds farm shop staff donating food hampers to our NHS heroes

Staff at Bert’s Barrow farm shop, in Hillam, have sent a luxury hamper to thank staff at St James’s Hospital and hope to extend the delivery service to other Yorkshire wards.

The boxes are made up of local produce including fresh fruit, tasty goodies from the farm shop and even Masons Yorkshire Gin.

The family-owned business, run by Charlotte Wells-Thompson, 37, and husband Jason Thompson, 48, will donate hampers to 10 hospital wards once £1,000 is raised on the GoFundMe page.

Charlotte said: "These poor people on the wards have it so hard, we just wanted to help.

"When someone asked if I could make them up a hamper I thought - there are so many people in the thick of it who need a pick-me-up.

"It's important to look after them."

The farm shop is also open as a drive-thru service which allows customers to drive to the farm shop, place their order and have their shopping put directly into their boot, eliminating the need to leave their car.

Customers can buy locally grown vegetables and salad boxes and a range of meat including products from Howden based Anna’s Happy Trotters, along with milk, eggs, pasta and other essentials.

Charlotte hopes the drive-thru service will drum up more attention for the GoFundMe page so the hampers can reach more of our NHS heroes.

The mum-of-two added: “The team are working so hard, I couldn’t do it without them.

“We’re really proud to be able to help those on the front line and the feedback we’ve got from drive-thru customers has been amazing.

“People are frightened to go out, so they can get fresh fruit and veg while supporting local businesses, and if it can get more attention to our GoFundMe page then even better.

“We’re all in it together.”

Bert’s Barrow drive-thru will be open on Mondays between noon and 4pm and Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm.

Special opening times on each day specifically for NHS and key workers will take place between 4pm and 7pm.
