New data has revealed that Leeds is one of the worst affected areas for coronavirus care home deaths in Yorkshire.

The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) showed that there have been 73 Covid-19 related deaths in Leeds care homes.

This puts the city behind Sheffield, which has seen 83 coronavirus deaths in care homes.

Both cities are among the top 15 areas in the country with the most reported coronavirus deaths in care homes.

Following Leeds is the North Yorkshire region which has had 69 recorded deaths.

Across Yorkshire, there the total number of care home deaths is 44.

These figures reflect deaths involving coronavirus registered from April 10 up to April 24.

Across the UK, care homes notified the Care Quality Commission (CQC) of 4,343 deaths of residents in homes, the ONS said.

It is the first time the CQC death notifications for suspected or confirmed Covid-19 in care homes have been published.
