Pendragon, the company behind companies like Stratstone and Evans Halshaw, is headed by chief executive Bill Berman.

This week Mr Berman announced he was donating 20 per cent of his salary to the NHS, as well as providing 20,000 sets of disposable seat covers for front line workers to use in their cars.

His garages will also be offering a 25 per cent discount on any repair or servicing work needed on NHS workers’ cars during lockdown. The voucher is also available to other emergency workers and social care workers.

Mr Berman said: “Every day, we are witnessing the extraordinary courage and compassion of our nation’s key workers and emergency services. All of us at Pendragon wanted to find some tangible way in which we could say ‘thank you’.

“We realise that many of you rely on your vehicles to get to and from work, or to get around your communities. Reliable transport is a lifeline in times like these.

“So, as a small gesture of our appreciation, I’d like to offer you a 25 per cent discount on any servicing or repairs your vehicle may need this month, throughout May, or longer, if the lockdown continues.”

The voucher is also available to other emergency workers and social care workers.

He added: “In addition, we will also be donating 20,000 disposable seat covers to local health trusts to support our community midwives and nurses. At this difficult time, every little bit we do will make a difference.”

Mr Berman also made a personal gesture of thanks: “COVID-19 is challenging all of us in business to think about how we can help the frontline. That’s why I will be donating 20 per cent of my salary to the NHS, to support the incredible work our doctors, nurses, porters and ancillary staff are doing for so many of us.

“Stay safe and thank you.”
