A health care company has announced the deaths of 16 care home residents in Yorkshire from coronavirus.

Palms Row Health Care run three sites in Sheffield - Westbourne House Nursing Home, Northfield Nursing Home and Newfield Nursing Home.

A total of 16 people have died from coronavirus across the sites - announced in a website post for residents and families from Nicola Richards, Director.

The statement read: "We are desperately sad to confirm that 16 of our residents have now died after testing positive for COVID-19 across our sites.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to their loved ones at this extremely distressing time."

"Infection rates at our sites have slowed in the past week and rest assured we are doing everything we can to prevent the transmission of the disease.

"We work closely with Public Health England and infection control teams at the hospital to ensure we operate to the highest standards."

The care home group praised staff members and described them as 'heroes'.

Director Nicola Richards said in the statement: "Despite the devastating effects on this virus on our community, our staff are genuine heroes.

"We can only ask that you keep supporting our teams and sharing our Facebook posts to support them during the most challenging of times.

"I say it every week, but they are performing miracles under very challenging circumstances.

"What’s so important to them – and me – is to also try and keep a smile on our residents’ faces."

A total of 7,682 people in Yorkshire have now tested positive for coronavirus, the Department of Health has confirmed.

The figure, accurate as of 12.30am today (Wednesday 22), is a rise of 400 cases since the same time on Tuesday.

Sheffield is the worst-hit local authority area with 1,746 cases, followed by Leeds with 1,010.

It comes as the Yorkshire death toll sadly rises to 1,272.
