To date, 31 per cent of all deaths registered in the city have been Covid-19 related.

While all hospital deaths are confirmed by testing, not all community and care home deaths will have had a confirmatory test.

Leeds City Council death registrations includes all deaths where 'Covid-19’ or ‘coronavirus’ is mentioned on the death certificate, whether as the only or main cause of death or as a contributing factor.

Of the 605 deaths registered so far:

- 598 (98 per cent) were Leeds residents

- 333 (55 per cent) were in hospitals

- 239 (40 per cent) were in care homes

- 12 (two per cent) were in a hospice

- 21 (four per cent) were in their own home

Coun Blake and Mr Riordan said: "The overall mortality rates in Leeds are declining, something we of course want to see continue.

"However, we must remember that behind these figures are many bereaved families, and our deepest sympathies are with all those who have sadly lost loved ones."

With lockdown measures beginning to ease, the pair said their priority was ensuring the number of cases in Leeds continues to decline.

They said: "We know that, while some people will be keen to resume some of their normal activities, many will feel anxious about the easing of lockdown restrictions, which is why we are encouraging everybody in Leeds to stay at home if you can, work from home if you can, and practice social distancing when you do go outside."

Leeds is one of 11 local authorities to develop bespoke coronavirus plans to tackle outbreaks in workplaces, care homes, and schools, and Mr Riordan is working with government on a national level on the test and trace programme.

The email said: "We are currently developing our Covid-19 outbreak plan, building on and expanding our existing, well-established outbreak plans.

"We are confident that Leeds is in a strong position to rise to what will be an unprecedented challenge for the city to deliver outbreak planning on this scale.

"The support of all our partners both in public health and more broadly will be vital to support residents to adopt the test, trace and self-isolate behaviours that will be required."
