Memorial fund for Leeds teacher Ann Maguire raises more than £200,000

THE CHARITY fund set up to honour the memory of Leeds teacher Ann Maguire is to award another wave of grants and bursaries - having received more than £200,000 in donations.

Because of the huge support it has received it is now inviting applications from community projects across West Yorkshire as well from groups and individuals in Leeds.

The Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund was set up, in April last year, in memory of the Corpus Christi Catholic College Spanish teacher who died after being stabbed by pupil Will Cornick - who was later jailed for her murder.

The fund, which is managed by grant-making charity Leeds Community Foundation, will continue to support young people through arts education activities, including drama, literature, poetry, singing, instrumental music and dance. The fund is also keen to see more applications which focus on the development of language skills through the arts.

Ann’s daughter Emma Maguire said: “We are excited to re-open for applications and ensure the generous donations we have received go towards inspiring and supporting talented young people. Our mother was passionate about getting people engaged with languages.

“Therefore, we hope to see more applications from projects which are actively developing young people’s skills in language in a fun and interactive way, through the arts. We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support for the Fund and look forward to continuing to distribute arts bursaries and grants to the people who need it most.”

Bursaries of up to £500 will be available for individuals aged between 11 and 18 living in Leeds, who have a talent in the arts and who without financial support would struggle to pursue their passions.

Larger grants of up to £1,500 will also be available for community groups and projects across West Yorkshire offering innovative and fun activities to allow talented young people to get involved with the arts.

Leeds Community Foundation’s chief executive, Sally-Anne Greenfield added: “It is great that the fund is now able to welcome applications from community projects across West Yorkshire, so there is even more opportunity to create and develop arts activities for young people.”
