Leeds teenagers miss out on career chances

YOUNG PEOPLE in Leeds are aware of less than one in seven of the wide range of jobs available to them after they leave education, research has suggested.

The lack of knowledge is linked to a disparity across the UK in careers advice available to teens in the years before they prepare to enter the world of work, a survey claimed.

The so-called “postcode lottery” could lead teens in certain areas to face unemployment, City and Guilds said, releasing the figures a day before schoolchildren across Britain receive their GCSE results.

The research found that large numbers of young people in Leeds were interested in careers in teaching, software development and medicine which attracted three times the number of young people when compared to the number of openings predicted by 2022. It’s likely that this is because young people are making choices based upon their own narrow experiences rather than being given access to broader information about the jobs market.

Jobs in the aviation industry, marketing and IT are being overlooked completely.
