A LEEDS school has cancelled plans for a sporting trip to Barbados - costing £1,650-a-head - because not enough pupils had signed up to it.

Horsforth School’s decision to organise a tour to the Caribbean island caused controversy last month with some parents criticising the amount they were being asked to pay.

Now the school has issued a statement saying the trip would not be happening.

It said: “Horsforth School can confirm that the Barbados Sports Tour planned for 2016 is no longer going ahead.

“As stated previously, this was a proposed trip which required a minimum number of participants.

“Although we did receive interest from several families, numbers fell short of those required by the organising company.”

Last month the school had defended the decision to run the trip which it said was not compulsory for pupils.

At the time the school said that although the cost of travelling to Barbados was high this should be balanced against the large number of more affordable events the school runs.

In previous years the school has run overseas trips for sports teams to either Italy or Spain.

In a statement issued by the school last month it said the decision to change the destination to Barbados had been “driven partly by student views and partly by some shortcomings with the current arrangements.”

The planned trip provoked an angry response on a community group for Horsforth on Facebook last month with some people describing it as “ridiculous”, unfair” and “disgraceful”.

However other parents had also defended the idea.

Michael Mason said he was not outraged and believed it was a great opportunity for pupils.
