Taste test of the new summer menu at Blackhouse in Leeds

Blackhouse has been a longstanding favourite of mine since forever, and they’ve really upped the ante for 2019.

We hosted a special evening with them last week to showcase their new summer menu, and we were all blown away with the culinary treats on offer. Most people think of steak when they hear the name Blackhouse, but they’ve just dropped some of the best seafood and veggie plates you’ll find in the city.

We began with a selection of starters, ranging from bestselling classics to newer items. I was instantly taken with the Smoked Salmon Roulade, which was fresh and flavour-packed with its side-serving of cream cheese, dill and chives.

The Piri Piri Calamari with saffron aioli was another dish that didn’t last long, while the Pulled Beef Bon Bon’s with burnt onion mayo were also demolished in record time. Mains brought yet more gems from the sea, and my choice of the Stone Bass Fillet with capers, spinach, vine tomato and beurre blanc was pure heaven with a glass of the fruity sauvignon blanc.

Served in their light and airy round conservatory on a balmy summer evening, the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. Just three days later, we were back in the very same spot, but this time launching their awesome Gin Garden. Hosted by Martin Miller’s Gin, it’s the place to be in central Leeds for sipping gin cocktails al fresco for the next few months.

Grease is still as slick as ever at Leeds Grand Theatre

Grease is one of those icons of modern pop-culture that never leaves you, and I honestly can’t remember a time when it didn’t exist. As an 80s’ kid, I loved watching it on TV growing up and even went on to appear in a stage production of it at high school – who doesn’t love […]

Rolling into a Leeds summer of food and festivals

So, June has been a washout compared to last year, but it’s not stopped me from having my most epic summer to date. Roundhay Park was the perfect setting for some fine Michelin Star pubs from Yorkshire and beyond. If gourmet gastro-pub grub, local ale and premium gin wasn’t enough, the music was off the […]

Why Liz swapped corporate life for cakes as her Leeds business expands

A self-diagnosed mid-life crisis led to Liz Richardson turning her hobby into a full-time business. Six months after launching a successful crowd-funding appeal she is now rising to the challenges of being a one-person start-up business and is looking to where she can now take the Porterhouse Cake Company. From being miserable in a corporate […]
