The Grease stage show at Leeds Grand Theatre.

Grease is one of those icons of modern pop-culture that never leaves you, and I honestly can’t remember a time when it didn’t exist. As an 80s’ kid, I loved watching it on TV growing up and even went on to appear in a stage production of it at high school – who doesn’t love Grease?
Forty-one years after one of my favourite films hit the silver screen, here I am in Leeds about to watch its latest reincarnation. Choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing’s Arlene Philips and starring Peter Andre as Teen Angel, I knew we were going to be in for good old fashioned camp fun.
What I didn’t expect was such a high amount of raw, upcoming talent. Dan Partridge (Danny) and Martha Kirby (Sandy) may be largely unheard of, but their amazing performance and impressive pipes were the star of the show.
Peter Andre might not be able to match the leading duo in the singing department, he wings it on charisma alone – how he’s survived the industry for so long.
The show has a grittier vibe than the film and previous stage versions, but the tunes are there. ‘You’re the One That I Want’ closed the show with a bang. If you’re after escapism and nostalgia, after all these years, it’s still electrifying.

The arrival of their new seasonal small plates menu served in the brand […]

How is man about town Jordan Odu soaking up summer in Leeds?

You’ve got to love Leeds. After months of whinging that ‘Summer’s not what it was last year’, the same people are now moaning that it’s too hot. Well, you won’t see me complaining. I took full advantage of writing this column on an extended lunch in the sunshine at The Potting Shed in Halifax, who […]

What’s in the mix at this year’s Leeds Rum Festival?

The Leeds Rum festival returns to the city for its fourth year and it is back with a bang. It is at the Corn Exchange in September for one night only – and this time it has teamed up with the Black Music Festival. In addition to bringing some chilled out tunes to mix with […]

Rolling into a Leeds summer of food and festivals

So, June has been a washout compared to last year, but it’s not stopped me from having my most epic summer to date. Roundhay Park was the perfect setting for some fine Michelin Star pubs from Yorkshire and beyond. If gourmet gastro-pub grub, local ale and premium gin wasn’t enough, the music was off the […]
