A new virtual reality system promises to let friends and family members watch and comment on your driving, even when they’re not in the car.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show, the Valeo Voyager XR “teletransports” observers into the car using a system of cameras, sensors and a high-tech headset.

Look and listen

Drivers can invite a “passenger”of their choice to view their driving via an internet-connected headset. Once they put the headset on, passengers get a view of the car and road ahead as if they were sitting in the back seat thanks to an array of surround-view cameras.

They and the driver can then speak to each other in real-time via the system’s microphones and speakers and the driver can even see a VR representation of their passenger in the rear-view mirror. Using handheld controllers the passenger can wave and even send information and images to the car’s media system.

Remote control

Valeo says the system could bring loved ones, such as parents of new drivers, closer to the motorist but could also be used by someone outside the vehicle could control it remotely.

Announcing the product, Valeo said: “Voyage XR creates the illusion that a person of your choice, located outside the vehicle, is by your side. In addition to its enhanced safety features for remote-control driving, Valeo Voyage XR opens the door to a whole new world of experiences inside the vehicle.”
