Updated: Man dies following serious collision that shut A1 near Leeds

A 36-year-old man has died after being involved in an 'incredibly tragic incident' on the A1 motorway near Leeds, according to police.

West Yorkshire Police has today released details of the collision which saw a section of the busy route closed for a large part of yesterday.

The force said that the incident involved an Iveco heavy goods vehicle which collided with a man who is believed to have been next to a Mercedes recovery van which was stationary on the hard shoulder of the carriageway.

The man died as a result of his injuries.

The incident happened at around 10.09am yesterday between junction 44 and 43 on the southbound carriageway at an area known as Aberford Dip.

Sergeant Ann Drury, from the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident and we are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed this collision or indeed seen either of the vehicles prior to the collision to contact us.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team via 101 quoting 449 of 15/06.”
