Derrick Orme’s one-man home-based food supply business doesn’t have a big shopfront, and most people won’t even know it that exists.

But it’s a lifeline for dozens of cafes and retailers - and brings Derrick an astonishingly good annual profit in return for working fewer hours than most office workers.

Now Derrick is retiring – and his food supply business is up for grabs for one lucky new owner to enjoy.

According to Derrick, the thriving business, which he has run for over 25 years using just his refrigerated van and some space in his garage, is packed with potential to make even more money.

Even better, he only works limited hours over the course of the week – and is even able to give himself almost an entire day off in the middle.

It might sound too good to be true, but Derrick insists the business, which acts as a go-between picking up goods from food suppliers and delivering them to local cafes and retailers, has been a great little earner.

“It couldn’t be easier,” he said. “I just jump in the van in the morning, meet up with the suppliers and then distribute their produce to various cafes and shops.

“It’s a lot easier for the café owners and retailers as it means they don’t have to go wholesalers and it’s easier for the suppliers who don’t have to do all the running around.”

Derrick usually starts work at 6.30am, but some days he’s home by 2.30 – and only works for three hours on a Wednesday.

And while he does cover around 400 miles a week across West and North Yorkshire in his refrigerated van, he says the business offers plenty of opportunity for expansion if the right owner wanted to seek out new businesses keen to have deliveries brought straight to their door.

The business brings home a comfortable profit and it comes with the refrigerated van and business essentials thrown in to get the new owner up and running.

Derrick said: “I’ve got some fridges in my garage which I used as extra storage, but you don’t need much else to run this business.

“It’s given me a good living down the years, so I’m now ready to step back and let someone else take over.”

According to a spokesperson for leading business agent Ernest Wilson, which has decades of experience selling businesses across Yorkshire, Derrick’s business has great potential for whoever takes it over.

“The business is a very profitable venture, with profits for the current year expected to show a rise.

“There is genuine and enormous scope to increase the scale of the business. An enthusiastic owner could easily canvass potential new customers to increase turnover and profits substantially.”

Ernest Wilson’s business specialists can help prospective business owners find the right business that suits their lifestyle, and offer expert advice to help get them up and running.
