The group recently reported an impressive five per cent increase in like-for-like sales while more traditional chains such as Marks & Spencer have seen a fall in sales.

Land Securities portfolio director Gerald Jennings said Primark has proved very successful at Trinity Leeds.

“It delivers to all demographic groups,” he said.

“It’s a value retailer, but all sorts of consumers go to Primark to shop. People used to think ‘I’m not a Primark shopper’ in the same way they thought they weren’t Aldi or Lidl shoppers. A lot of that consumer feeling to value retailers has gone. Primark appeals to such a broad range of consumers with such a big offer.”

He added that the team behind Primark believes the Trinity Leeds store is the best in its portfolio.

“They believe it’s absolutely hit the spot, which is fantastic for them and for us,” he said.

Land Securities said Trinity Leeds is well on target in terms of visitor numbers and lettings.

It is now over 96 per cent let and the remaining space is well on the way to being occupied.

Mr Jennings said that Christmas started off slowly with many people leaving it to the last week to shop, a pattern also seen at Land Securities’s White Rose shopping centre.

“Shoppers left it late, but then they came out,” he said. “Retailers weren’t too sure how Christmas was going to be, but it was better for many than they thought it would be. There were some really strong performances that could continue into 2014. Confidence might be coming back. We’re really pleased with Trinity Leeds and White Rose.”
