Leeds named one of the most expensive cities worldwide for construction

Leeds has been named as one of the most expensive construction locations in the world in a list dominated by UK cities.

Design and consultancy firm Arcadis listed Yorkshire’s biggest city as the 21st most expensive city in the world, with London ranked as number one.

Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool and Birmingham were also named in the top 25.

Arcadis said that thriving regional economies were seeing increased activity across sectors including offices, hotels, retail, education and student housing.

Prior to the Covid-19 shutdown, the construction industry was growing at nearly three times the rate of the wider economy.

Edel Christie, UK Managing Director for Buildings at Arcadis, said: “Globally, we now face the challenges that Covid-19 will bring. With the global disruption of the pandemic, there is a real risk that the momentum towards climate action will be lost.

“It is crucial that we overcome the crisis, while still enhancing resilience and sustainability, and plotting a course towards a carbon neutral future.
