When looking at average applications per vacancy in June compared to a year ago, it appears that these Yorkshire cities are competitive locations to find a job in right now, with average applications per vacancy having jumped up by 97.1% in Leeds, 85.7% in Sheffield and 11.4% in Hull.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, comments on the findings: “The rise in applications will be welcome news to organisations that have struggled to source top talent in recent years. However, the sad reality is that hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to look for a new role because of the pandemic.

"Competition for these jobs is intensifying and many professionals are struggling to even make it past the application stage. If you’re in this position, it’s important to pull out all the stops. "Use your network to spread the word and try to think of creative ways to showcase your skillset on your CV.”

CV-Library's data also reveals that job numbers are slowly picking back up month-on-month, increasing by 51.3% in Leeds, 42.9% in Sheffield and 26.8% in Hull in June. However, they are still lower than they were a year ago; dropping by 60.8% in Leeds, 48.1% in Sheffield and 43.5% in Hull.

Interestingly, when looking at average salaries, it appears that pay has risen month-on-month in these cities; by 11.4% in Sheffield, 4.5% in Hull and 1.9% in Leeds.

Mr Biggins added: “As lockdown restrictions started to ease in June, we saw a number of different industries return to the workplace and this helped to instil confidence back into businesses. While we still have a long way to go until job numbers return to normal levels, we are seeing signs of recovery, which is positive news for candidates. If you are looking for a new role right now, patience is key. Don’t rush through your applicants and compromise quality for quantity.
