Project D doughnuts enjoyed by Love Island stars and Royal family launches delivery service in Leeds

Project D, based in Derby, has found fame for its brightly-coloured sweet treats which have been enjoyed by Love Island contestants and members of the Royal family.

The handmade doughnuts will be available at a pop-up stall in Hyde Park Book Club, Headingley Lane, this Saturday from 11am-7pm.

The bakery will then launch a delivery service in Leeds every Thursday, starting on September 24.

Project D changes the flavours of its doughnuts every six weeks and also offers a vegan range.

Among the company’s most popular creations is the Homer, a ring doughnut with pink icing and sprinkles; the Biscoff with a caramel base and blended Lotus Biscoff crumb; and the Red Velvet, a white chocolate base, dipped in red velvet cake with a lashing of white chocolate.

Project D’s co-owner, Jacob Watts, said: “Since lockdown began, we have been inundated with requests for doughnuts – I think that now, more than ever before, people need a sweet treat to cheer them up.

“We were getting a huge number of requests from people living in Leeds asking us to start delivering in their area, so we decided to head up the M1.

“We’re thrilled with the response we are getting and our doughnuts seem to be as popular in Yorkshire as they have been nearer to home.

“It’s very exciting for us as a business and we hope to set up a more permanent home in the city.”

Project D was launched two years ago and began selling doughnuts at food events and festivals across the Midlands, before expanding to make orders for corporate events and one-off commissions.

Mr Watts said the highlight of the company’s first year was being asked to create 60 doughnuts decorated with royal crests for Windsor Castle.

“We will never know if the Queen tried them, but we like to think Harry and Meghan might have shared one before they left for America, the home of doughnuts,” he said.

“We’ve had an incredible 12 months and thanks to the power of social media we are starting to get requests from across the UK.

“This is our furthest move outside the Midlands, but we think our doughnuts are the perfect compliment to a cup of Yorkshire Tea.”

The doughnuts, which are delivered in biodegradable and compostable boxes, cost £11 a box plus delivery fees.
