Whirlpool, which now owns the brands, announced a product recall in December 2019 due to a safety risk with certain Hotpoint and Indesit machines.

The machines affected were manufactured between 2014 and 2018.

More than four million people have contacted Whirlpool to register their model, but the percentage of customers responding to the recall in Leeds is slightly less than the national average.

Whirlpool is appealing to all customers in Leeds with a Hotpoint or Indesit machine to check their model online, even if they have done so previously.

The company will advise customers whether their machine needs to be recalled and will offer a replacement or repair if needed.

Of the 209,000 customers who have registered an affected model, Whirlpool says more than 93 per cent have received a repair or replacement - with the vast majority getting a brand new machine.

Whirlpool's vice president Jeff Noel said: “Customer safety is our number one priority, and while we are pleased to have resolved so many cases already, we want to help as many affected households as we possibly can.

“That’s why we are reaching out to customers in Leeds, where registrations are lower than in other parts of the country.

"If you have a Hotpoint or Indesit washing machine and you haven’t registered it yet, please do so today. It takes less than five minutes and if yours is affected, we have a team on hand to arrange a replacement for you as soon as possible.

“Our washing machine recall has continued throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, and we remain fully committed to resolving as many cases as we can while taking all necessary steps to ensure it can be carried out safely and in line with official guidance.”
